Homeowners generally turn to a kitchen remodeling company for one of two reasons. Either their kitchen is dated and falling apart or the layout doesn’t work for their needs. If your reason for calling a remodeler is a poor layout, how do you make sure that your new layout works before the remodel gets started? Here are some tips to help you love your new kitchen design.
Understand the Work Triangle
The work triangle is the space between the refrigerator, sink and stove or oven depending on your design. Most of the time when you’re cooking, you’re going to need quick and easy access to all these elements and you should be able to get to them within a few steps. You also want to be able to open the refrigerator door while someone is preparing food either on a counter or at the stove. Now that built-in trash cans are the norm, don’t neglect the importance of having the trashcan easily accessible from your workstation.
Evaluate What Isn’t Working
For example, if your microwave is over your stove and you either want your kids to have easy access or find that you and other people seem to battle over the space by the stove, consider a new location for your microwave. One option is the drawer style microwaves placed at a convenient height for kids to use. Don’t forget about your cabinet and drawer space. If you’re always short on drawer space, look at replacing some cabinets with deep drawers with built-in organizers. Do you have hard to reach cabinet spaces? Look at pull out shelves to provide easy access to the entire cabinet depth.
One of the biggest complaints we hear as a kitchen remodeling company is the lack of contiguous work space in the kitchen. Solving this problem generally requires rearranging your kitchen and may include adding an island or peninsula. If your issue is that you have too much on your counters, consider appliance docks which are coming back around as an element homeowners desire. This can keep your counters clear and give you workspace you need.
As you and your kitchen remodeling company finalize your plans, be sure to look at clearance for your refrigerator, oven and dishwasher doors. You don’t want to get part way through the build and realize that you didn’t leave enough clearance to easily open them without interfering with another element in the kitchen.
